Networking Basics

Agriculture has undergone yield-enhancing shifts in the past, including mechanisation before the second world war and the introduction of new crop varieties and agricultural chemicals in the green revolution of the 1950s and 1960s. Yet yields of important crops such as rice and wheat have now stopped rising in some intensively farmed parts of the world, a phenomenon called yield plateauing. The spread of existing best practice can no doubt bring yields elsewhere up to these plateaus. The cotton gin, invented by Eli Whitney in 1794, reduced the time needed to separate cotton fiber from seed. In the 1830s, Cyrus McCormick’s mechanical reaper helped modernize the grain-cutting process. At about the same time, John and Hiram Pitts introduced a horse-powered thresher that shortened the process of separating grain and seed from chaff and straw.

Considerable research is being done on developing smart contact lenses that can collect health information or treat specific eye conditions. Swiss company Sensimed has developed a noninvasive smart contact lens called Triggerfish that has a sensor embedded in a soft silicone contact lens that detects tiny fluctuations in an eye’s volume, which can be an indicator of glaucoma. The device transmits data wirelessly from the sensor to an adhesive antenna worn around the eye. An increasing number of farmers are using IoT-enabled tools to monitor weather, soil composition, soil moisture levels, crop health and growth, and livestock activity. The data can also be analyzed to determine the best time to harvest plants and create fertilizer profiles and schedules. IoT allows devices to be controlled in ways that were not previously possible.

Still, regardless of the speed at which they arrive, these large holdings will come more and more to resemble manufacturing operations, wringing every last ounce of efficiency out of land and machinery. Meanwhile researchers at Clara Foods, in San Francisco, are developing synthetic egg white, using transgenic yeast to secrete the required proteins. Indeed, they hope to improve on natural egg white by tweaking the protein mix to make it easier to whip into meringues, for example. They also hope their synthetic white will be acceptable to people who do not currently eat eggs, including vegans and some vegetarians. Dr Post’s original hamburger, which weighed 140 grams, was assembled from strips of muscle cells grown in Petri dishes. Including all the set-up costs, it was said to have cost 250,000 ($350,000), or $2.5m a kilogram.

IoT projects aim to connect these up, and then add further intelligence into the system. Another example of a large deployment is the one completed by New York Waterways in New York City to connect all the city's vessels and be able to monitor them live 24/7. The network was designed and engineered by Fluidmesh Networks, a Chicago-based company developing wireless networks for critical applications. The NYWW network is currently providing coverage on the Hudson River, East River, and Upper New York Bay. With the wireless network in place, NY Waterway is able to take control of its fleet and passengers in a way that was not previously possible.

We promote the transition towards organic farming and agroecology across the global South. This census covered the entire country, i.e., Khyber Pakhtunkhwa , Punjab , Sindh and Balochistan provinces. The geographic coverage was also extended to Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, each as a separate entity. As per previous practice and approved procedures, the Agricultural Census 2010 was sample based. The sample design, however, varied for different regions of the country in accordance with the ground realities.

Metal detectors can be tailored to explicitly detect metal in specific manufacturing operations such as sawmilling or injection molding. More information about metal sensors/detectors may be found in our related guide All About Metal Sensors and Detectors. Vision and Imaging Sensors/Detectors are electronic devices that detect the presence of objects or colors within their fields of view and convert this information into a visual image for display. Key specifications include sensor type and intended application, along with any particular transducer features. More information on vision and imaging sensors may be found in our related guide All About Vision and Imaging Sensors.

The upshot is a closed system that can be set up anywhere, generates no pollution and can be kept disease-free. That means old-world species such as sea bream and sea bass, which cannot now be grown in America because they might get out and breed in the wild, could be delivered fresh to the table anywhere. The early days of genetically engineered crops saw two huge successes and one spectacular failure. The successes were the transfer into a range of plants, particularly maize, soyabeans and cotton, of two types of gene.

Computers automatically detect USB card and can install the drivers required to support the USB network card automatically. Create files and store them in one computer, access those files from the other computer connected over the network. You get a simple user interface, multisite full-stack management, and automatic updates delivered directly to the switch. ‍A backbone is a part of a network that connects different pieces and provides a path for information to be exchanged. ‍Metropolitan area networks are networks that stretch across a region the size of a metropolitan area.
